the Thompsons Take a Hike

Well, now.   That was fun.  My hare-brained idea, or is it hair-brained?  Well, anyway, my idea was to hike the green trail with the girls while the boys ran whatever trail their hearts desired.  I wanted to scope it out to see if it were run-able.  Only two miles or so of green trail, so it shouldn’t be too much.  And it wouldn’t have been, had the trail been clearly marked, and had we ample daylight left just in case we got lost.  Fortunately, Mark and Nate ran counter-clockwise on the same trail the rest of us hiked, so we eventually met up and took the trace road back to the parking lot, and there was plenty of daylight left.  But never again will I go on a “quick” hike on trails unknown and scarcely traveled without better preparation.  Water-check.  Bug spray-check.  Cell phone-check.  Map-almost check (Mark had it).  Flashlight, whistle, and everything else one should have on a hike—um, well, no.  I was a Cub Scout, not a Boy Scout.  Boy Scouts are supposed to be prepared, Cub Scouts simply have to do their best.

As I may have mentioned a time or two in the last three weeks, school is going full-throttle right now.  We have settled into a pretty good routine, and the girls are adjusting to school schedule quite nicely.  One of my biggest challenges lately has been to schedule the 2 1/2 hours of music practice that needs to happen on a daily basis.  No brass while baby is sleeping, and Bradford can’t practice piano while she’s down, either, because he wants to play #71 loudly, with both hands.  If you don’t know what #71 is, come to our house at 1 p.m. and you’ll be sure to hear it.
